Discover The Dryer For Fun and Relaxation
What’s the story behind this slice of history turned modern entertainment venue? Back in 1943, J.V. Cardiff & Sons had a bold vision: to build the first concrete rice dryer in Texas. Standing proudly along Highway 90, this innovative structure marked a milestone in agriculture and industry. Business boomed and by 1945, the family doubled down on their success, adding a second rice dryer with twice the capacity.
Fast forward to 1966, when the Cardiffs took their legacy to new heights, partnering with the Borton Company, to construct a colossal rice dryer standing at an impressive 177 feet tall. At the time, it was the tallest rice dryer in the United States and remains the tallest structure in Katy, Richmond, and Rosenberg. Rice production at the site continued until 1987, when the industry shifted, and the dryers became silent.
After nearly 30 years of abandonment, The Dryer found new life in 2021 when a local developer saw its potential. With the support of the Katy Heritage Society, the property was revitalized, preserving its historical significance while giving it a fresh purpose. Today, The Dryer is more than just a landmark, it’s a celebration of Katy’s past and future.
So what about the present and the future?
The Katy Beer Garden is the crown jewel of The Dryer’s transformation. Opened in 2024, this 35,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor beer garden is the ultimate hangout spot with a massive outdoor television and a bar stocked with a diverse selection of craft beer, wine, cider, and cocktails.
A rotating lineup of food trucks keeps the menu fresh and exciting. From Texas BBQ to authentic Mexican tacos and classic American eats, there’s something to satisfy every craving.
In 2025, The Dryer added a new layer of charm as the site of the Old Katy Farmers Market.Whether you’re hunting for organic produce, artisan goodies, or just a relaxed Saturday outing, the farmers market has quickly become one of Katy’s top community events.
The Dryer’s story doesn’t stop there. Coming soon is the Katy Rideable Train, an attraction sure to delight both kids and the young at heart.
Also in the works is a three-story building that will take the entertainment options to the next level. The first floor will host a modern food court, with tenants like a café and bakery, Fusion Grill, Taqueria Tex-Taco, and Jos Brisket are already in the lineup. The second floor will offer co-working spaces for productivity with a view, while the third floor will serve as an event and banquet space for celebrations of all kinds.
And let’s not forget about the plans for the dryer silo itself. It’s set to house a museum, gift shop, and restaurant.
